So let's say you need to switch servers for a website, right? Doesn't sound like a big deal, just a few hours to transfer data and whatnot. Wrong.

What was supposed to take just a couple of days has turned into a week-long event. Basically, we're upgrading our main server and adding on an additional server. I wanted to have a fresh install of all the latest backend software (PHP, MySQL, modules, etc) and also add on some other services to help handle server loads. The biggest problem we've been having is not the installing of the software, but the moving of all the data. To give you an idea of the sheer amount of data being moved, let me tell you what it consists of.... For starters there is the actual database. It has millions of rows of data, millions. It takes up about... 10 gigs I think. Right now the partition for our database is only 14GB. It's literally full up both with the database and with log files. So one of the things I had to have is larger drives. We have a beast of a machine dedicated to the database now, with dual 300GB hard drives in a RAID1 array (meaning they mirror each other for redundancy in case one fails). That will be nice.

That's not all though, in regards to data. No. Millions of rows of data doesn't sound like much (or maybe it does). There are also images and the scripts and all that jazz. This next part is staggering. Each creature has two images; one being the thumbnail and the other being the full-size view. No creature shares the same images. There are more than 600,000 creatures.

1,200,000+ images!! 1.2 million.

Insane I say. Insane. Can you imagine having a folder on your computer with that many files!?

So needless to say, it's taking awhile. Not just for that reason though. Also because the hosting company decided to try to compress the entire site (almost 200GB) before moving it. No idea why. Futile. So now they're transferring everything with a syncing utility (basically like FTP), which is moving along.... Albeit slowly. Did I mention they have a team dedicated to "data migration"? Yeah, around the clock someone has been monitoring the status, able to give us an update at any point. I'm still wondering the logic behind their first several attempts of moving everything though..... heh.

I haven't really updated in awhile. A long while. There's actually a reason for it. Not a good reason, but a reason nonetheless. Don't really feel like getting into it here.

I just wanted to say that I'm back.

Lots going on. College, car problems (what else is new), long nights at work, etc. I feel like I've been under a lot of stress lately from many directions, so I'm trying to work through them now and get back into the "social" aspect of things. Like LJ. I feel like I've distanced a lot of people, and I'm sorry I have.

Here's hopefully to a better year, filled with more useless entries from myself. :)

I also have some memes I have to respond to from forever ago. I'll do that over the next week.

For now, it's 2AM and I have to be up in a few hours for class.

Take care everyone.

Love to Sarah. <3<3

"Look into my eyes... yes... yeeesss....", the voice resonated with an evil pitch. Sitting there directly across from the man, I was unable to look away from those terrible, terrible eyes. It was as though they looked not at me, but through me. Cliché, yes, but no less true on this occasion than any other. However, the odd thing about this man's eyes were that they were... white. Not cloudy or glazed, no, a solid white.

"Your thoughts I do see, young man.... your thoughts I do see...", his raspy tone carried through my bones. What was I supposed to think? I was -afraid- to think. Granted, I didn't buy it, but what if the man really could see my innermost thoughts? So of course, I had to inquire.

"Wh-what am I th-thinking then?" I asked with a stutter, swallowing nervously, hands wrenched.

"In your mind I see a very clear image... it appears to be... a young woman.... Who is she, James?"

Shocked. There were no other words for it. The things he had just spoken caused me to tremble. At no point in time had I revealed my name to this... this... man; this man whom had the power to reach into my mind and soul, then mercilessly tear out information piece by piece.

At this point, I was terribly frightened. What else could this man see? What secrets hidden deep inside could be foretold by this man?

"Well?" the man with white eyes asked once more, his voice becoming even more sinister now.

"Err... well... actually... uhh..." I stumbled, unable to form the words necessary to relay my answer.

"Speak up boy... you don't have all day!" His tone turned more volatile now.

"We-well s-sir... I was a-actually thinking about..." I began, heart pounding in my chest.

"Spit it out, will you!"

"I was thinking about those yummy looking glazed donuts behind you! Okay!? I said it!" And I had said it, finger pointing to the racks of donut behind the man with the white eyes. "And my name is Sally, thank you very much!"

"Bah..." and the man with the silvery sunglasses tossed the donuts in a bag, handing me my change as I paid for my donuts. "Thank you and please come back to Donut Dunkers again. Have a nice day."

I shook my head as I walked out. How unproffesional to wear sunglasses while working. And to think I had been a customer there for years.

Where to start....

We're done at Arby's now. It's one big drama-fest filled joke after another. So I told them today
"we're done here". My exact words. I told them not to bother scheduling us again, we won't be coming back to work.

Wajas is official now, I'll start getting paid an actual wage for my time there now. Another interesting work-related opportunity came knocking yesterday as well. While we were at Arby's, I got a call (didn't answer it) and later listened to the voice mail they left. It was someone from Lockheed Martin. Apparently they had found my resume on Monster.com and were interested in me. I thought that was pretty cool.... It was entirely out of the blue, too. I had uploaded that thing months ago with not so much as a peep about it. Nor did it have all that much on it. In fact, just CASU.

I had tried calling back yesterday afternoon around 5:30, but I guess they had already gone home for the day. So I called again today and got through. That's when the lady from Lockheed told me she had been requested to do some research on Monster to find people with Section 508 Compliant skills (which I have from designing the CT CASU web site). She's in charge of putting together a job description for the position before it gets posted, and when she found my resume she passed it along to the project manager, who was interested in me. We're going to have a phone interview either Monday or Thursday, whichever works best for the PM.

I'm not entirely sure what the position entails yet, but it's a great prospect. They said they could probably get me into the $40k salary range. I'd still be doing Wajas, too, which would be really nice.... I'm not going to get too excited yet though, still need to talk to them and find out what it's all about and if I even meet their needs. :) Talk about a resume booster though!

In other news, the apartment move is pushed back a couple of days. Apparently the current tenants weren't supposed to actually move until yesterday, which means the apartment people won't be able to get in there until maybe tomorrow or Sunday, and it won't be ready til Tuesday at the earliest or Thursday at the latest.

The stupid lady that was there for a little while (who also told us we would be unable to have our little Maggie because it would be one cat too many) is gone now. She's also the one that told us the apartment would be ready this Monday. Which is the day we notified the electric company to cut the power to this apartment and start service at the new one. Sarah's going to see if maybe they need a receptionist / secretary to replace that one. Would be pretty nice if they did and she got the position, it's right down the parking lot and would probably be decent pay -- at least more than Snarby's.

So yeah, all is going very well. Oh and for Kittysunlover: I didn't get anything done on Avernal this week or last. Sorry. :P I have the time now, so I'll be sure to put more time in and also get you a rough schedule Monday. Things should settle down now, once the move is complete and I'm down to one job. ;)

For now, everyone take care!

Love to Saryboom! <3

[ mood | blank ]

Tinkering on Wajas, dreading going back to work tomorrow. Never want to go back to be honest. My neck still aches. Oh well.

Headed to the lake this weekend for some fireworks. Hopefully the rain will put itself on hold for at least a couple days this weekend! :D

~ 14 days until the apartment is ready. Woooohoooo!

Been feeling in an arty mood the past day or so, but I haven't really done anything about it. Aside from spending quite a bit of time last night getting my tablet to work with CS3 on this laptop. So I'll probably be spending some free time arting around. Still have a sketch commission to do for Sarah's Nana for her boss. <.< Guess I ought to do that first. ;P

Other than that, I don't have much to say. Not that I ever do. I find that anymore I don't really have much to say. Not sure why. I love to have interesting conversations, but I just can't seem to find anything to talk about. I think a lot of it has to do with work-related stress and other issues that will hopefully be going away soon, and replaced with happy fluffy bunnies -- or some other form of goodness.

It'll be nice to get into our new apartment, get it organized and tidy and be able to keep it that way. We'll have actual space to store things and actual shelves to put things on. First thing I'm going to do when we move in is put up some decent shelves and set up some in-cabinet shelving for better organization. I look around our apartment right now and it's rather depressing. :/ I think that's part of why I feel the way I feel a lot of the time -- reserved and without much thought. Ziibit.

Talk to you all later. Hope you're all doing well and are healthy, happy, and safe!!

~ Michael

I survived today! Yay! Ended up having to stay a little later at work because we were understaffed. Was there from 8am til almost 7pm. Yay! And all I got was this lousy headache. :)

In other news, Estuko made an official post on Wajas about me becoming full time, so that's doubly awesome. :D

Getting close to moving time. We'll be starting to pack up some boxes and trash a lot of junk. Looks like dad and my brothers will be here from the 1st through the 9th, so that will be fun. Getting our new apartment just in time. ;)

Nothing else to say at the moment except: I'm going to lay down for a little while, get some rest. I am /worn/ out. Not much sleep these past few nights.

*kisses and love to Sarah*

Another fun weekend at Arby's coming up. 8-5 Saturday and Sunday. Hooray. Tomorrow is 12-5. Joy.

Taking a break from working on Wajas. Probably be headed to bed soon anyways. Only a couple more weeks now before Sarah and I move into our nice and bigger apartment -- complete with a fireplace!

Yay for space! The back bedroom is going to make a nice little home office. Would love to build in a desk like the one on this blog post.

Excited excited! =)

Work tomorrow at 8am. How fun. :)

Only not.

More reason to want Wajas full time. I'll be able to wake up when I want, work when I want, wear what I want (be it pajamas, shorts + t-shirt, or nothing at all). Wewt. That, and work on Avernal & Rainstones. Even if I get what I'm hoping for, though, I think I'll still work at Arby's maybe one, but no more than two days a week. Will become a shift manager soon, and hopefully make $8-10/hour, so that would be a nice little chunk of change. Also, it'd be good in case something doesn't work out with Wajas, and too, I'd have that nice discount. ;P

In other news, I got to play Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 tonight with Sarah's dad and brother. It was pretty fun. I just hate the little windows you have to deal with when you play multiplayer (even on a 37" tv). Total headshot pwnage though.

Gonna get to bed here soon, right after the clothes in the wash are done so I can throw them in the dryer. Was up til 4:30 this morning working on Wajas. Tired.

Totally unrelated, but I can't wait to move into our new apartmeeeent. More room will be so nice. 7 more days til this lease is up.

Cancun was a blast. And that's an understatement. :) All the food we could eat, and boy did I eat my fills worth. Had ice cream with every meal just about, too. Not just any ice cream either, authentic helados. Plain old vanilla ice cream was sooooo creamy smooth and delicious. All the food down there tasted slightly off, but not in a bad way in the least. I even tried octopus. Wasn't too bad, but definitely not my favorite. Then there was one place we went to, it was a more formal dining establishment (right inside the resort) called MoMoNoHaNa. They were a Japanese restaurant and oh my word was the sushi excellent. As was everything else they had.

Sarah and I got to swim with dolphins, which was unlike anything I had ever done. It was incredible getting to sit on its back while it skyrocketed into the air almost 300 feet. We did somersaults and backflips and... okay, so we didn't really leave the water, but still.... :P The trainer had us put our heads under the water (we were wearing snorkels) and had the dolphin sing for us. Which was bizarre, as the sounds weren't what you would expect. I can't even really describe it to be honest.

I'm trying to upload some of our pictures, but it's not quite working. :( I'll have to do that later I suppose.

In other, non-vacation news, been putting out my resume to a couple of new places. Two of them are local schools looking for IT Specialists, and the other is the Fort Worth Zoo looking for a System Admin. Would be fun to work at either place. The money would be better than what I'm getting now, too. Although it would take away more of my free time that I'm already lacking anyways.

Sarah and I are moving into a bigger apartment at the end of this month, which also means higher rent (+$175/month). So I really could use one of those jobs. Actually, I need one of those jobs. As it is right now, I'm working at Arby's at $6.25/hour and spending the rest of my "free" time working on freelance projects. Had to turn a couple away just because I couldn't afford it time-wise. One of the projects I'm working on I hope might turn into a full-time gig, which would absolutely rock. Not only would I be able to actually get some work done on it, but I'd be able to work from home and Sarah could leave Arby's too. I've got my fingers crossed. We both do. If that doesn't pull through, I'll definitely need one of those other jobs (or one similar) which, like I said, will kill any free time, but at least it will pay the bills.

My dad and brothers are probably going to come down at the end of July. That'll be fun. I haven't seen them in almost 2 years. I bet they've grown up quite a bit. They're 11, 9, and 7 now. And little Peyton is going on 2 years old. Crazy. She'll be back home though when the boys visit. They'll spend about a week or so here.

Anywho, I'm out for the night. Like I said, I'll try to get some pictures uploaded in the next week or so.

Love to Sarah! <3

I still live! Albeit swamped by work and (once more) school and trying to have a personal life. ;)

Not much to post at the moment. Did get approached about becoming a shift manager at Arby's (as did Sarah). Will probably take them up on that whilst I try to secure other employment.

Saw 300 the other night (a week or so ago now) and really enjoyed it. I'd like to see more movies like that -- great visuals, all action, decent acting. I mean, not a ton more, but it's hard to find a movie like that, and sometimes all I really want is a beat-em-up, kick-some-butt action.

There was something else I was going to write, but I can't remember now. And I'm sleepy. *yawn*

I'll post more later. :)

[20 Feb 2007|08:31pm]
[ mood | silly ]

So yesterday I decided to undertake another project. It was about $30 (not including a couple of tools that will come in handy later).

Pictures....Collapse )

At the back of apartment we have a little outdoor enclosure with a small coat-closet sized storage room. It has walls that are about 4 feet tall, and the rest is just open. There are actually two openings. One is 51" high by 5' wide, the other is 48" high by 30" wide. Well, it's a nice little enclosure but it's practically useless....

So I decided to screen it in. Bought nine 8' wood strapping and a roll of screen, along with some other basic supplies -- screws and staples. Took most of yesterday afternoon through the evening.

Now we can let the kitties outside and they can't jump over the walls to leave. :) It'll also keep bugs and other critters out. We can grow herbs and flowers out there without birds being able to peck at them. It can also act as a second room for the kitties during the day because we can leave the sliding glass door open. I'll probably be building a kitty tree to put out there too that they can climb on. :D

Yay for a project I actually finished!

I am being forced to make an update.... <.< :P

Nah, it has been awhile since I've updated. Been working, schooling, reading, watching "24". On Season 4 (disc 2) of "24". Not so impressed with this season so far. Hopefully it gets better.... Just finished reading "Charm School". Great book, want to check out more titles by the author (Nelson DeMille).

Anyone else reading this journal ever heard of him or read the book?

Got an interview Tuesday for a technology management position at a local school. Hopefully that goes well! Could definitely use the job.... $6.25 / hour at Arby's won't cut it for long. ;)

Did get a tax return though, which was nice. $600. Made $30,000 last year. I was spoiled. Oh yes, guess I forgot to mention, that job went away as of February 1st. Finalized. Over. Tossed the files and all records. Sad to see it go, but I need to move on. Was at a dead end there -- even if the money was nice.

If only there were steady jobs doing what I really enjoy -- designing, coding, etc.

Anywho.... Had a great Valentine's day with my loooover. I made some roasted garlic & red bell pepper dip with fancy crackers for an appetizer, then cooked some rib-eyes in a skillet smothered in shallots and mushrooms, followed by homemade truffles. =) Twas very yummy.

<3's to Sarah! LOVE LOVE LOVE
